The Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS) at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Research Specialist. This full-time position is primarily an in-person role located in the Division’s downtown Charlottesville office, with some flexibility for virtual work. DOPS is the most productive university-based research group in the world dedicated to the scientific study of extraordinary experiences of human consciousness, and this is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic and dedicated team.
The Research Specialist will support ongoing and new research projects of the Chester F. Carlson Professor, Dr. J. Kim Penberthy, focusing on altered states of consciousness, both spontaneous and induced, and their impact.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct literature reviews and synthesize findings for research purposes.
- Assist in the construction and implementation of surveys using Qualtrics.
- Collect, organize, and analyze survey data.
- Utilize digital technology to support research activities.
- Facilitate research studies exploring altered states of consciousness through methods such as meditation and psychedelics.
- Investigate the impact of altered states, including, but not limited to, after-death communications as well as spontaneous and induced subjective mystical experiences.
- Collaborate with a research team while maintaining the ability to work independently.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal investigator
